Historic Scottish Rite, located in Decatur's Oakhurst neighborhood, was the first Shriner's hospital for crippled children to open in the United States. It was designed by noted Atlanta architect Neel Reid of the firm Reid & Adler. Constructed in 1919, it became a model for the treatment of polio with it's well ventillated porches that facilitated community interaction. The building has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. When this project bagan in 1999, the Historic buildings and adjacent 1950's nurses' dormitory had been vacant for nearly 10 years. Along with structural stabilization, the buildings were restored to their original condition and adapted for mixed (office+retail) use. This project qualified for Historic Tax Credits under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
